THE INCREDIBLE STYLE THAT WORKS AGAINST ALL OTHER STYLES
You probably didn't know it...but you're a Martial Arts super star in the making! Stop by and try our Jiu-Jitsu class and you may discover qualities that you never thoght you had.
Our students have various goals when joining the adult Brazilian jiu-jitsu class. Some practice Martial Arts to get in shape and to relieve stress and feel good. Others want to improve their discipline and confidence because Jiu-Jitsu is very effective as a street self-defense martial art. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu gives anyone the ability to overcome any attacker regardless of size and strength.
Jiu means “gentle, supple, flexible, pliable, or yielding.” Jitsu means "art" or "technique" and represents manipulating the opponent's force against himself rather than confronting it with one's own force. It’s based on clinching and grappling techniques that use leverage, timing and technique. Gracie or Brazilian jiu-jitsu was created and developed by Carlos and Helio Gracie in the early 20’s in Brazil. It is mainly known for being modified to help smaller weaker opponents to be able to defend themselves against a bigger, stronger attacker.
The main strategy in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a self-defense is to manage the distance, close the distance, take the opponent to the ground and submit the opponent using leverage based grappling techniques such as arm locks, chokes, leg locks, neck cranks or small joint manipulation. In our dojo in Ewing, NJ we teach Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.
There is difference between training for a competition and the Self-Defense aspect of Jiu-Jitsu. Competition is not mandatory, nor expected of students. Because jiu-Jitsu is fun, some students enjoy competing as means of testing themselves and their abilities. Competitive or sports jiu-jitsu uses a wider variety of techniques that are designed for achieving better results in a competition settings.
